Empowering Farmers and Women in Sri Lanka’s Dry Zone: The SLRV Project

The Strengthened Livelihoods through Reduced Vulnerability of Dry Zone Farmers with Empowered Women (SLRV) project, spearheaded by SAPSRI and funded by the Australian Government’s AusAID program, aimed to uplift 100 smallholder farmer families in the Anuradhapura District of Sri Lanka. Focusing on the Mihinthale, Thirappane, and Nuwaragam Palatha Central Divisional Secretariat Divisions, the project aimed to boost local food security through sustainable agricultural practices.

By promoting biointensive agriculture techniques, the SLRV project worked to enhance the sustainability and resilience of farming practices. This initiative provided support to 100 farms, facilitating the adoption of these innovative methods. It also improved market access for sustainably grown produce and increased the availability of drought-resistant seeds and organic fertilizers.

The ultimate goal of the SLRV project was to empower local communities, strengthen livelihoods, and ensure long-term food security in the region. The project’s success, as recognized by its beneficiaries, has encouraged SAPSRI to seek opportunities for further enhancement and expansion in the future, contingent on additional funding.
