Helping young women to earn a good income with a traditional craft
January 2009 – December 2010
Funded by HSBC
Continuing our partnership with HSBC, we launched this project to build on the success of our Empowering 200 tsunami-affected lace makers project. It aims to ensure the sustainability of the revival of the beeralu lace industry. Currently, it is mainly elderly women who engage in the craft. This project is working with 100 young women, and aims to demonstrate that beeralu is not just an ‘old fashioned’ craft, but rather a creative means of earning a good income. The young women are working closely with the 200 women who are already engaged in the industry as a result of the initial project.
